Frequently Asked Questions
What is Pilates?
The Pilates method is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises developed more than 90 years ago by Joseph Pilates. Pilates can transform the way your body looks, feels and performs. It builds strength without bulk and creates a sleek toned body. It also teaches body awareness, good posture and easy graceful movement. Pilates is a safe and sensible exercise system that will help you look and feel your best.
How do I get started?
If you are new to Pilates we recommend starting with our Introductory package. This package includes 3- 55 minute sessions at a discounted rate. In these 3 sessions you will learn the fundamentals of Pilates to insure you get the most out of your practice.
What should I wear?
We recommend comfortable clothing that will move with your body. For your safety, please don’t wear big baggy shirts or sweatshirts. We need to see your body to insure that your form is correct. Pilates is done either barefoot or with gripper socks.
What are your cancellation policies?
We enforce a 24 hour cancellation policy for all sessions and classes. Any session or class cancelled with less than 24 hours notification will be charged in its entirety. All packages expire 12 months after date of purchase, no refunds.
Do I need to be thin to do Pilates?
Absolutely not. At Longevity Pilates we will customize a safe and effective program especially for you.
Will Pilates help me lose weight?
Pilates will help you lengthen and strengthen every muscle in your body. By doing so you will burn calories more efficiently. Pilates combined with a healthy diet and cardio activity is a great healthy way to lose weight. Many exercise programs leave you feeling exhausted, but when you leave a Pilates session instead of feeling exhausted you’ll feel relaxed and refreshed. Pilates helps sculpt long, lean muscles and you’ll quickly find that your clothes are looser even if the scale has not changed yet.
Can I do Pilates if I have medical or health related issues?
At your first session you will fill out a comprehensive health form. We want to know what problems you have and what medications you are taking. We can then tailor the perfect program for you. If you are recovering from an accident or surgery, we can work with you post rehab. We will be happy to work closely with your Doctor or Physical Therapist to insure you safely stay on the road to recovery.
I’ve heard that Pilates can help me “grow taller.” How can that be?
Once a person has reached adulthood, they can’t “grow taller.” What Pilates can do is correct postural problems that will enable you to stand taller. As your alignment and posture improves, you will not only stand taller, you may get relief from nagging aches and pains such as shoulder, neck and back problems. It is not uncommon for a client to measure and inch or more taller after doing Pilates regularly.
Can I do Pilates if I’m pregnant?
Pilates is an excellent exercise method during a normal pregnancy. Pilates can help your body deal with the physical changes you are experiencing and also help prepare you for labor and delivery. We will put together a program that addresses your individual needs. If you are new to Pilates, we do suggest waiting until after your baby is born to begin your practice. We will not accept clients new to Pilates while they are pregnant. If you have been doing Pilates prior to becoming pregnant we will be happy to work with you.
